PreK, Kinder & First Grade:
SNOW DAY #4 & #5: We know a lot about instrument families: brass, percussion, strings and woodwinds. Within each family, there are SO many instruments. Watch the video below and then explore the Instrument Families page. Listen to at least one instrument from each family. Sing, sign and teach a family member your Howʼs the Weather song in Lingít: Wáa sá ḵuwatee?
The Instrument Families: After watching the video above, listen to at least one instrument from the brass, string, percussion and woodwind family. Before listening, can you predict which instrument will sound lower by its size and length?

Wáa sá ḵuwatee at shí? Howʼs the Weather song: Practice singing all of our weather words in Lingít. Do you remember the sign language that goes along with it. Sing and teach it to a family member!

SNOW DAYS #2 and #3: CREATE YOUR OWN MUSIC!
If you made some instruments at home, you can use them to play along with music you make using Chrome Music Lab. Here are a few favorites, so have fun exploring!

SNOW DAY #1: MAKING INSTRUMENTS AT HOME
In the this sing-along, "What Hatches from an Egg?", we'll look for found objects to serve as percussion instruments - instruments you shake, hit or scrape. Take a photo of your homemade percussion instrument or videotape yourself playing it. We'll use these found instruments to accompany our singing in the second video. Check out the additional resources to learn more about how sound is made and other ideas for making your own instruments at home.

WEEK OF MAY 4TH: SPRING AND PLANTS
This weekʼs lesson continues to focus on our beautiful earth and all that it provides us, including plants. Every time I think of spring, I think of Antonio Vivaldi who wrote the Four Seasons. He wrote the music with poetry in mind. Listen to Vivaldiʼs Spring and draw a picture of what you hear. Do you hear birds singing at the beginning of the piece? Then learn the different parts of plants and what they do by listening to three songs in very different styles - rap, pop and English folk song. Listen to each one. What do they have in common? What is different about them? Which is your favorite and why?

WEEK OF APRIL 27th: SEA WEEK AND THE BEACH
What a great week to explore our Alaskan beaches, tide pools and intertidal creatures. Join me in singing this silly song, Down by the Bay, which encourages us to create our own rhyming verses. I also changed the words from "bay" to "beach" in this Juneau version of "Down by the Beach." Have fun!

WEEK OF APRIL 20th: CELEBRATING EARTH DAY
This week we are celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd, a day that should be celebrated every day! Join me in singing, "Save a Tree for Me," which talks about the importance of recycling - something our Glacier Valley students have been doing to make their own instruments. Weʼll also be pattern seekers by looking at the pattern (or form) of this sing-along. Checkout the additional videos on the What a Wonderful World, Landfill Harmonic Orchestra, and Heal the World.

WEEK OF APRIL 12th: SHEʼLL BE COMIN' ʼROUND THE MOUNTAIN
This week we will celebrate Alaska Folk Festival by singing a folk song and creating our own band by creating instruments from home. This week challenge yourself to create a stringed instrument to add to our percussion from last week. Weʼll play our instruments on the beat while we sing Sheʼll Be Cominʼ ʼRound the Mountain, a Call and Response song in which the first phrase is followed by a second phrase that is different, yet completes the thought. For examples "Sheʼll be ʼcomin ʼround the mountain when she comes" (Call) and "Toot, toot" (Response).
